Minnie Riperton was an American soul singer and songwriter celebrated for her remarkable five-octave vocal range and her iconic 1974 hit "Lovin' You." Raised in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood, she studied music, drama, and dance as a child. Riperton began her career singing lead for the group The Gems and lent her voice as a backing vocalist at Chess Records, working with artists like Etta James and Chuck Berry. She later became the lead singer of the psychedelic soul band Rotary Connection. Riperton achieved major success with her gold album "Perfect Angel." Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1976, she continued to perform and became one of the first celebrities to publicly discuss her diagnosis, later serving as a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. She passed away in 1979 at the age of 31, leaving a lasting legacy in music.
