Focus is a renowned Dutch progressive rock band founded in Amsterdam in 1969 by Thijs van Leer, Hans Cleuver, Martijn Dresden, and Jan Akkerman. After starting out as the backing band for a Dutch production of the musical Hair, they released their debut album in 1970, but achieved international fame a year later with the album Moving Waves and the hit single Hocus Pocus. This success was followed by further acclaimed releases such as Focus 3 and Hamburger Concerto, featuring notable tracks like Sylvia. Known for their complex compositions blending rock, classical, and jazz elements, Focus went through several lineup changes and briefly disbanded in the late 1970s before reuniting and recording new material in the 2000s. The current lineup, active since 2016, includes Thijs van Leer, Pierre van der Linden, Menno Gootjes, and Udo Pannekeet. With over a million certified album sales in the United States and continued international touring, Focus remains one of the Netherlands’ most influential and enduring rock bands, with their latest album released in 2024.
