Cabaret Voltaire is an English electronic music group formed in Sheffield in 1973 by Stephen Mallinder, Richard H Kirk, and Chris Watson. Named after the historic Dada nightclub in Zürich, they are recognized as pioneers of industrial and experimental music, blending DIY electronics and avant-garde performance art in their early years. As their sound evolved, they embraced post-punk, synthpop, dance, and funk influences. Following Watson’s departure in 1981, Mallinder and Kirk continued as a duo until disbanding in 1994. Kirk later revived Cabaret Voltaire as a solo project until his death in 2021. In 2025, Mallinder and Watson announced a 50th anniversary performance in Sheffield at the Sensoria Festival.
