Melissa Viviane Jefferson, known professionally as Lizzo, is an American singer, rapper, songwriter, and actress born in 1988 in Detroit, Michigan. She moved to Houston at age ten and later started her music career in Minneapolis, initially focusing on hip-hop. Before gaining mainstream attention, Lizzo released the albums Lizzobangers and Big Grrrl Small World, followed by the EP Coconut Oil, which marked her transition to pop music. Lizzo broke into the mainstream with her third album Cuz I Love You in 2019, featuring hits like Juice, Tempo, and Truth Hurts. Truth Hurts became a chart-topping anthem and helped her win three Grammy Awards in 2020, including Best Pop Solo Performance. Her empowering single Good as Hell also became one of her signature songs. She continued her success with the single Rumors featuring Cardi B and her fourth album Special, led by the hit About Damn Time, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Lizzo made history as the first Black female singer since Whitney Houston to win the Grammy for Record of the Year. In addition to music, she has acted in films such as UglyDolls and Hustlers and hosts the Emmy-winning reality show Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.
