Behringer 1273 — 2-Channel Microphone Preamplifier and Equalizer

The Behringer 1273 is a 2-channel microphone preamplifier and equalizer that distills the sound of the legendary British 1073 console module into a single 2U rack unit. Built around a fully discrete Class A signal path with custom Midas input and output transformers, it delivers up to 80 dB of clean, resistor-stepped gain per channel.

Custom Midas Transformers and Tone Switching

Each channel carries custom-built Midas transformers on both the input and output stages, supplying the harmonic character of classic British preamps. A dedicated Tone button switches the input transformer impedance to optimise the load for ribbon and vintage dynamic microphones.

Preamp Performance and Headroom

The discrete Class A topology and resistor-stepped gain network give the unit quiet, repeatable level control.

Inductor-Based 3-Band EQ and High-Pass Filter

The 3-band equalizer uses inductor-based rotary switches, delivering the broad, musical shaping response of the original 1073. A passive third-order high-pass filter with five selectable frequencies cleans up rumble.

• Low Band: 35 / 60 / 110 / 220 Hz — shapes warmth and weight
• Mid Band: 360 / 700 / 1600 / 3200 / 4800 / 7200 Hz
• High Band: 10 / 12 / 16 kHz — opens or tames the air on cymbals

Connectivity and Rack Integration

Every input and output runs through the Midas transformer stage, with balanced XLR and 6.3 mm jack connections on the front and rear panels. Front-panel Hi-Z instrument inputs accept guitars and basses directly.
