[1] antioxidant: a substance that limits or reduces the free radicals. Free radicals are tiny harmful particles. As they are free, they need to be tied to something. Therefore, they attack the cells, damaging them. The cells then spill into their surroundings, and since the cells also contain substances causing decomposition, it damages the surrounding cells. It is exactly how the inflammatory process begins. Free radicals can damage or deactivate essential parts of the body.
